    What is non-emergency ambulance transport?

Which journeys it covers, who it is for, and how to book the right vehicle and crew for a planned or same-day move.

Most ambulance journeys in the UAE are not sirens and flashing lights. They are a father going home from hospital after hip surgery, a mother being taken to dialysis three times a week, or a patient moving to a specialist hospital in another emirate. These are non-emergency journeys: planned, or arranged the same day, for a patient who is stable but can't travel safely by car. This guide explains what that service covers and how to book it well.

    The journeys it covers

    Who it is for

The simple test is whether the patient can travel safely and comfortably in an ordinary car. If they need to lie down, can't sit upright for the whole trip, need oxygen or monitoring on the way, can't manage stairs or a car door, or their doctor has asked for them to travel with a clinician, a non-emergency ambulance is the right choice.

    Choosing the vehicle and crew

    Wheelchair vehicle

For patients who can sit but not climb into a car. Ramp or lift access, certified restraints, and an attendant who helps from inside the home to inside the destination. Our guide to wheelchair or stretcher transport walks through the choice.

    Stretcher ambulance

For patients who must travel lying down. A licensed paramedic travels with them, with oxygen and monitoring on board. See stretcher transport.

    ICU-level transfer

For ventilated or high-dependency patients moving between hospitals: an ICU ambulance with a critical-care nurse and, where needed, a doctor.

    What is on board

A properly licensed private ambulance carries a stretcher, oxygen, suction and cardiac monitoring, staffed by a qualified crew under physician oversight. Because the journey is planned, the crew can do what makes it comfortable: wait while paperwork is finished, carry the patient from bed to bed, let a family member ride along, and hand over to the receiving team with written notes.

    How to book it well

    • Describe the patient, not just the trip: how they get around, whether they use oxygen, and their weight if it matters for lifting
    • Give access details: floor, lift size, gate codes and where the vehicle can park
    • For discharges, share the ward and expected discharge time so the crew can coordinate with the nurses
    • Ask for the price before you confirm, and for insurance documentation if you plan to claim
    • Book recurring trips once and let the provider repeat them

Care before and after the journey

The journey is often one part of a longer recovery. EMRS can follow a discharge with nursing at home, physiotherapy and doctor visits, across all seven emirates.

    Questions people ask

What counts as non-emergency ambulance transport?
Any medically supported journey for a stable patient: hospital discharges, dialysis and chemotherapy appointments, transfers between hospitals, airport journeys after treatment abroad, and moving bed-bound or elderly patients between homes or facilities.
Who needs it instead of a car or taxi?
Patients who must lie down, who can't sit upright for the length of the trip, who need oxygen or monitoring on the way, who can't manage steps or a car door, or whose doctor has said they should travel with a clinician.
Can I book non-emergency transport for today?
Usually, yes. Same-day bookings in Dubai are typically picked up within 15–30 minutes. For planned journeys, booking 2–4 hours ahead guarantees your time, and the day before is best for early-morning pickups.
Does insurance cover non-emergency ambulance transport?
Many UAE insurers reimburse medically necessary transport such as discharges and transfers between hospitals. Ask the provider for an itemised receipt and transfer record to support your claim.
    Does EMRS provide emergency response?
No. EMRS is a non-emergency provider. We handle planned and same-day medical transport and home healthcare across all seven emirates.
